Sticks and Stones...

Why oh why, with all of the toys that we buy our girls, are their favorite toys actually not toys at all?
Example 1: STICKS My children are compelled to pick up any stick they find... and then proceed to run at really high speeds. Possibly they might stop running and begin poking things with it. And in case you didn't know, some sticks are better than other sticks. I would share the secret of what makes a great stick, but I'm still in the dark on that one. It appears to be determined on a case by case basis designed to make the other sister very envious of said stick.

Example 2: ROCKS We have a big pile of gravel at the end of our street. To me it is an eyesore, but to the girls, it is a treasure trove. There are big rocks, pretty rocks, cute rocks, weeny-tiny rocks, etc. Lauren spends her time categorizing the rocks into two categories: 'mommy rocks' (big rocks), and 'baby rocks' (little rocks). After awhile of digging in the dirt and gravel, the girls will then hurl rocks into the creek. More accurately, Lucy hurls rocks into the creek, and we all duck when Lauren winds up to throw! When we are done at the rocks, we then have to take the best ones with us for a 'collection.' Needless to say, we have collections all over our garage and house!

Bonus Example: Bugs (dead or alive) Any live bug is met with great effort to catch it. If by chance it is actually caught, it will suffer a slow demise as my girls love it to pieces (literally legs and things start falling off...) On the other hand, a dead bug is fascinating for reasons I have yet to discover. And if they become bored with it, they can always bury it in the rocks or poke it with a stick!

Oh, how funny! I have very vivid memories of bugs and my sister. We would pull the legs of Grand daddy long legs, cut earth worms in half, fourths, eigths, and if any lightening bugs were unfortunate enough to be found by us, we would squash them, scrape their lightening bottoms off and spread them on our finger nails like special light up finger nails polish. Very fond memories!

I love post like this. It reminds me that at this age, boys and girls are really not all that different! LOL

True that! Abby will pick up a rock anywhere (her favorites being in parking lots full of cars!!) and just throw it. I think it just brings kids a certain amount of satisfaction knowing that they can have complete control over some-thing or some-bug.

Hahaha! I have worked so hard to make my son be gentle with the lightning bugs coming out now, I have some weird attachment to them! Ants, spiders, or flies on the other hand, smoosh away!
